Time to Kick-Off The FLL Senior Solutions Season

I hope everyone has been having a great summer!  Just wanted to drop everyone a message about our plans for the 2012 Robotics season.  The official FIRST LEGO League (FLL) challenge will be released at the end of August, but this year we’re working on a NEW strategy.

Last year, our teams seemed to get their inspiration & genius later in the season.  The kids got so much done towards the end and came REALLY close to winning the regional competition.  Our rookie team – the Disorder of the Phoenix – posted the number one score for both divisions in Round 1, and our varsity team won FIRST place in team spirit for thinking outside the box during their teamwork exercise.  To be honest, I think that all we really needed was a little more time… So the NEW strategy this year is to start working on the project and some programming challenges BEFORE the competition starts.  This should help the kids manage their time better throughout the season and give them a better shot to win the Regionals this year and go on to the State FLL Robotics Championship.

With that in mind – I’d like to kick-off the season as soon as we can.  We can do Friday August 3rd (4:30pm-6:30pm) in the elementary school or later next week at my office building in Herndon.  Here’s the list of actions required:

ACTION ITEMS:

  1. Please confirm receipt of this email and let me know if you’re still interested in having your child on the FLL teams this season.
  2. I need everyone to make sure you’re registered on the new website.  (I’ll need student volunteers later to help maintain the site)
  3. I need some ideas for field-trips road trips to research the topic of aging with Senior citizens.  Let’s see if we can learn and have fun at the same time.
  4. I need help with summer camp curriculum ideas – tell me what you guys want to see (advanced programming, building, sensors, ??)
  5. And I need to collect scheduling info – what days will work best going forward for everyone – since we may be looking at expanding out of the house and into the school (or an office building in Herndon)

Our kick-off meeting should also be an Open House Event where we can show anyone interested about FIRST, FLL and LEGO Mindstorm Robotics – look at it as both a demonstration and recruiting event – and I’ll get the pizza.  Please reply to coaches@herndonrobotics.org to let me know if everyone can make it on such short notice – I would like to have it at the Herndon Elementary School on Friday (but I need to confirm) otherwise we can pick an evening next week.  Let me know.

Thanks,
Tom Welsh
